EDMONTON - Music-focused reality TV doesn’t get much more stripped down.

Edmonton’s Mind-Engine Productions has created a new series following the exploits of an all-female, porn-star rock band. The show is called Tight and features ex-adult entertainer Bree Olson, once a live-in girlfriend of Charlie Sheen whom he named one of his top-two “goddesses.” During their relationship, Olson said she was out of the porn game.

Tight, which is also the name of the band, sees Olson as the manager. “I know there is a stigma against porn stars but I think attitudes are changing,” she says in a release issued by the production company. “I mean just look at Sasha Grey. She’s got a Steven Soderbergh movie and a role on Entourage. It doesn’t get more mainstream than that.
“And no one is willing to work harder than I am.”

The idea for both the band and show belongs to Shaun Donnelly, who has lived in Edmonton since he was eight years old. As creator and executive producer of Tight, the 43-year-old was looking for a followup to the Starz network’s Make Me a Porn Star and Playboy TV’s The Boy Nexxt Door. “The tricky part was finding porn stars with musical talent,” he says.

Contacts in the adult industry suggested Layla Balbelle. “Beautiful girl,” Donnelly notes. “She looks just like Natalie Portman. It wasn’t hard to find a singer. Drummer was the hardest part, actually.” Adult entertainers all, the show’s lead singer is Australia’s Monica Mayhem, with lead guitarist Labelle from Montreal and American bass player Tuesday Cross. Alicia Andrews of Moncton, who now lives in Edmonton, drums.

As they toured and played real gig across the United States, the actresses didn’t always get along. “My God, it was 100 times worse than I thought it would be,” Donnelly reports. “It kept getting to the point where I thought one of them would kill another. I thought,’ I don’t want to be the reality show producer that finally has someone killed.’

“There was a lot of drinking on the tour. We told them at the beginning, ‘You’re not allowed to touch each other.’ I think you lock anyone up together for a month and a half it’s going to get fairly intense. The pressure of performing every night. Because at the end of the day, they’re a real band.”

While singer Mayhem has moved on, the band is interesting in continuing the experiment, including a second series and more touring. Howard Stern has requested an appearance, according to Donnelly.
Post-production was done here in Edmonton. The show’s 13 episodes will air on MavTV in the U.S. starting in October, as well as networks in the U.K, France, Australia, Russia, Poland and Turkey. The European version will have mild nudity.

It has no Canadian home as yet. Donnelly shrugs: “Canadian television is very conservative and this show is pretty wild.”
