1. Mary Kay Letourneau  Mary Kay Letourneau got started early with Vili Fualaau. Like, when he was in eighth grade…and she was 31. Unhappily married at 34, Latourneau began an affair with Fualaau, 13 at the time, in the summer of 1996. Her husband sniffed them out, and Letourneau was arrested for rape — just a few months before she gave birth to Fualaau’s baby girl. She wound up serving seven years for second-degree child rape, got out of the clink in 2004, and married Fualaau a few months later. 2. Margaret De Barraicua  This Sacramento teacher was 30-years-old when police found her in her car with a 16-year-old male student in 2005. The arresting officer reported steamy windowsand two people moving around inside. Oh, and De Barraicau’s infant son was strapped into a safety seat in the back. No big deal. She pleaded guilty to four felony counts of statutory rape in November 2005 and got a year in jail. 3. Debra Lafave  This reading teacher from Temple Terrace, Fla. got jiggy with her 14-year-old student in a portable classroom in 2004. The cops caught wind of the affair, which Lafave denied. But when a convenience store camera caught them together, her case got thin. She was sentenced to seven years’ probation and had to register herself as asex offender. 4. Carmina Lopez  To call any of the women on this list a “cradle robber” would just be redundant. But for 32-year-old elementary school teacher Carmina Lopez, there is no better descriptor. The Palm City, Cali. instructor met her would-be beau when she was 28 and he was, um, 11. A 2009 pre-trial hearing revealed that Lopez would buy him gifts in exchange for intercourse. As of this writing, Lopez is still awaiting trial. 5. Jennifer Mally  In 2008, when investigators left the room after questioning her about a fling with a 16-year-old student, Mally, a 26-year-old high school English teacher and cheerleading coach, called her husband. “I know what I’m doing,” she told him. “I watch CSI.” So apparently the smart perps on CSI plead guilty to three counts of sexual conduct with a minor and serve six months in a concrete cell. 6. Pamela Smart  This is a good one. 23-year-old Pam Smart had an affair with Billy Floyd in 1990, a freshman at the New Hampshire high school where she worked as a media director. She and her adolescent beau conspired in murdering her husband. (Not-so) Smart said Floyd and his friends acted alone. The police didn’t buy it, and she’s been locked up in upstate New York since 1991 for accomplice to first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and witness tampering. On the bright side, she actually got a movie deal out of her story. Sort of. She was the inspiration behind the 1995 Nicole Kidman flick, To Die For. 7. Lisa Robyn Marinelli  When a father saw his 15-year-old son zipping up his pants as he crawled out of this 40-year-old substitute teacher’s car, the jig was up, so to speak. In March 2008,Florida authorities charged her with having unlawful sex with a minor, but in court, things got even weirder. It came out that Marinelli gave the teen her underwear as a memento, and would routinely send him sexts like these ones: “How about a quickie 2 morrow afternoon ” and “U can meet me at home at 3. Real men only need 20 min! We will be alone cause there is a field trip.” She pleaded guilty to unlawful sex with a minor and in April 2009, was sentenced to one year of house arrest. She was also required to register as a sex offender in Florida. 8. Angela Comer  The 26-year-old Tompkinsville, Ken. middle school teacher was fired when it came out that she was having an affair with an eighth grader. She and the 14-year-old skipped town in January 2006, along with Comer’s 4-year-old son, and wound up in Mexico, trying to get married, when the cops found them. The teacher pleaded guilty to one count of third-degree sodomy and one count of custodial interference and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Before her sentencing, Crazy Comer abruptly changed her story, accusing the 14-year-old of abducting her, holding her at gunpoint, and forcing her to drive to Mexico…then breaking a guitar over her head when she attempted to escape. 9. Stephanie Ragusa  Long live the Hulk! This 28-year-old Florida math teacher was already wrestling charges for shacking up with her students when the press blew up over her love-letter affair with 17-year-old Nick Hogan, son of Hulk, while the mini Hulk was serving time in 2008. She’s still awaiting trial on multiple charges of felony sex with a minor and lewd and lascivious battery. 10. Lisa Lavoie  The troubadour. Lavoie, a 24-year-old Massachusetts elementary school teacher, took a little joy ride with one of her eighth-grade students in early 2009. The 15-year-old’s parents caught wind and called for an investigation that led to an East Coast manhunt for the road trippers. West Virginia finally nabbed them on February 23, 2009. In June, Lavoie was indicted on six counts of statutory rape and one count of enticing a minor, and was later charged with three counts of aggravated rape and abuse and three more counts of statutory rape. 11. Elizabeth Stow  Another teacher who really made the rounds with her students, this 26-year-old first-year English teacher from California was arrested in April 2005 when school officials caught wind of her steamy relationships with a handful of her 17-year-old students. Stow pleaded no contest, and in November was given a suspended sentence of nine years and ordered to serve one year in a county jail. 12. Traci Tapp  What is it with these wrestlers? New Jersey gym teacher Traci Tapp had a fling with15-year-old star wrestler Jason Eickmeyer in 2003. Turns out Tapp, known to the student body as the wannabe cool teacher who liked to show up at parties and play drinking games, had a history of these student affairs. In February 2006 she pleaded guilty to “harassment by offensive touching” but served no time. She was fined $225, and her story landed in the January 2009 Rolling Stone piece, “Sex, Lies and Phys Ed” 13. Beth Geisel  Beth Geisel was a boozehound. She was also a Catholic-school teacher in Albany, which canned her for having naughty time with her 16-year-old student. That tryst earned her felony charges of third-degree rape and two charges of endangering the welfare of a minor. She tried to play the victim, crying blackmail and claiming the students took advantage of her. But it didn’t help that she was known by the student body as the, er, party teacher. In September 2005, Geisel was sentenced to six months in jail. 14. Shannon Best  Finally, a lesbian. 33-year-old North Carolina social studies teacher Shannon Best had relations with her 18-year-old female student in 2008, and once caught admitted to a month-long affair that included kissing, fondling sexting. Yes, sexting. She got 45 days in jail, 18 months of probation, and a $250 fine. But at least she didn’t have to register as a sex offender. Mothers, lock up your daughters. 15. Pamela Rogers Turner  A Tennesse elementary school teacher arrested in February 2005 for frolicking with 13-year-old student. She got off relatively easy with a plea deal and an eight-year suspended sentence. Too bad she got picked up again in April 2006 for sending the lucky teen sexual pictures and videos, resulting in seven more years in state prison. 16. Rebekah Todd  Students at White River High in Buckley, Wash. described this 25-year-old gym teacher as “cool” and “hip.” She drank with them at parties and showed striptease videos in class. But she took it a little too far in March 2007 when she was arrestedfor going down on a 17-year-old football player. She pleaded guilty to attempted second-degree sexual assault and wound up with six months in jail. Just a few months in, she asked to be released because she was pregnant with her husband’s child. Lucky guy. 17. Jennifer Lea Burton  Same old story, minus the snack pack. A 39-year-old gym teacher in Orangefield, Texas had a three-month relationship with a 14-year-old female student in 2008. Burton was indicted on three counts of felony sexual assault and three counts of improper relationship between an educator and a student. She’s still awaiting trial, but felony sexual assault is punishable by up to 20 years in the slammer. 18. Nicole Long  By the time the 29-year-old Ohio high school teacher went to court on charges of sexual battery of her 17-year-old former student in 2006, she was seven months pregnant with her victim’s child. She pleaded guilty in January 2006 to third-degree sexual battery and was sentenced to 45 days in a county jail. 19. Abbiejane Swogger  This 34-year-old Pennsylvania teacher’s aide got caught red-handed in a hotel room chock-full of weed, beer, condoms and…teenaged boys. Whoops. By the time Swogger made it to trial, she had racked up 39 separate charges, including providing crack cocaine to minors. In May 2009 she was sentences to up to six years’ probation and an ensuing 36 years in the clink. She’s a registered sex offender for life. 20. Cara Dickey  Dickey, a 29-year-old high school teacher from Buffalo, was equal parts Kevorkian and pedophile. She went missing with one of her 14-year-old students in June 2008, and when the cops finally found her sleeping in her car (the kid was at the mall) it came out that Dickey had supplied him with rum, Tylenol, and NyQuil as part of an assisted suicide effort. The judge gave her four years in March 2009 for second-degree statutory rape.

“SHE CAN GO TO HELL: Says woman ‘made up’ rape for money.”

That was the cover story headline on The New York Post on Sunday morning.

The woman who can go to hell? The 29-year-old fashion executive who accused an NYPD officer of raping her when she was blackout drunk one night in 2008. The woman damning her? Julia Moreno, the accused cop’s wife, who swears his innocence.


Is Julia Moreno herself a victim — a victim of the idea that a good woman stands by her man and self-sacrifices, no matter the personal cost to her?

Just a sleazy tabloid capitalizing on the jury’s acquittal Thursday of Kenneth Moreno and Franklin Mata, the “rape cops” whom the NYPD promptly fired for official misconduct? Nope. The New York Times also gave Julia Moreno an opportunity to rage against the victim. In a piece that also ran on Sunday called “For Ex-Officer’s Wife, Anger at His Accuser and Tears at an Upended Life,” Julia Moreno trashes the “young girl” who is “not mature” and “wanted sympathy from her friends.”

While Julia Moreno assailed the victim in both the Post and the Times, the two papers handled the respective stories differently.

The Post, of course, took the more sensational track: the victim is described as “a money-grubbing liar” in the second sentence. Julia Moreno also accused the victim of, quote, “hav[ing] two days to make up this story with her lawyer friends before she went to the hospital.” I don’t know what “lawyer friends” she is referring to, but I wonder if we can assume there’s a class-resentment element: the victim was somebody who had “lawyer friends” who could help her screw over the blue-collar cop?

 In any case, Julia Moreno then said the victim was motivated by money, citing her $57 million lawsuit against the city. The Post quoted her on how she knows in her heart that Kenneth Moreno is a good guy:

“I know him. He’s the guy on the force that they call to take home partners’ girlfriends when they’re too drunk. He’s trusted by everyone. He’s been on the force 18 years without ever having any incident with women.”

That last quote is the only one I personally think was really in good taste in the whole article: the wife of the accused said something substantive about the accused, rather than an open season character assassination on the victim. Alas, moving on ...

In The New York Times article, Julia Moreno was slightly more nuanced, describing how the two years from the accusation to the trial were difficult on the Moreno family. But the Times also printed Julia Moreno’s conspiracy theories about the victim’s accusations, despite the fact her husband warned her, quote, “realistically, I can’t tell you I’m going to come out of this okay.” But no matter! Julia Moreno says:

“Everything about this case was so set up, I feel. The parts that didn’t fit, they molded them to make them fit in their little twisted minds, to make up this crazy story against him.”
She then trashed the victim some more:

“From the beginning of time, this is what girls do — young girls, inexperienced. They’re not mature. They get drunk. They do these things and, you know, they want sympathy. In his case I believe she wanted sympathy from her friends because they threw her out of her own party.”

The victim was 27-years-old at the time of the — hardly a young girl or inexperienced. (Julia Moreno herself is currently 28.) I’m also calling BS on her comments that the victim was thrown out of her own going-away party. From the many, many articles that I’ve read on the story, she decided to leave around midnight because she was so drunk.

Lastly, Julia Moreno repeated the most obnoxious, “I watch too much ‘CSI’” comment of them all regarding the lack of DNA evidence:

“Being a realist, you know that deed [sex] is a messy business.”
Um, Julia? Did you miss the part where your husband was taped by the victim wearing a wire where he said he wore a condom?

Breathe. Breathe. Breathe.

There’s a lot of problematic crap in these articles. First of all, did Julia Moreno really need to be given a platform to blame and slut-shame the victim? Victims in high-profile rape and sexual assault cases already struggle with tropes that work against them in the court of public opinion: they’re attention whores, they’re unreliable drunks, they’re after money. I don’t understand why it’s relevant, at all, for the accuser’s wife — biased much? — to get a platform for that. To be sure, a lot of us would have nasty things to say about someone who was directly responsible for dragging our personal lives through hell for two years. But the character assassinations of the victim are so ignorant. While I’m not questioning what may have been a journalistic impulse to shed light on family members who were affected by the “rape cops” saga, I am questioning how it was handled, i.e. why newspapers printed Julia Moreno’s ranting and raving verbatim.

That brings me to the next thing that’s problematic about these articles: the catfight narrative. It’s juicy to read Julia Moreno s**t-talking the victim. As author Leora Tanenbaum explains in her book, Catfight!: Rivalries Among Women — from Diets to Dating, from the Boardroom to the Delivery Room , the media loves nothing more than to watch two women go at it. Although the “rape cops” case is not directly a rivalry amongst women, there is the same “she said/she said” element. It is a tired, old narrative that should have no place in respectable journalism.

And lastly, there’s the “woman in denial” narrative. That’s another juicy angle for us readers: Meet Julia Moreno, the new Mary Jo Buttafuoco! To its credit, The New York Times, at least, put it delicately and let readers draw their own conclusions, writing:

“While Ms. Moreno sees the jury’s verdict as affirmation that her husband was telling the truth and his accuser had fabricated her story, many people around the city remain unconvinced. “
Still, what’s the translation? Everyone thinks you’re delusional, lady. If you believe Kenneth Moreno raped the victim — which I and innumerable others do — there’s a certain amount of gawkish “Can you believe her?” head-shaking to level at Julia Moreno. (Especially when you learned that this wife-who-stands-by-her-man started dating him when she was only 18 and he was 33.) Even I’ll admit to being entertained that Julia Moreno is so delusional — until I remember how sad it is that the media is all too happy to give her a rope to hang herself by ... which, in turn, makes her vulnerable to judgment. Lesser accusations of infidelity would not fly with a lot of women, yet this man is accused of raping a drunk woman while wearing an NYPD badge and she is convinced of his innocence. Although he denied raping the victim, Kenneth Moreno testified that he, in fact, cuddled the victim while she lay in bed wearing only a pink bra, sang her a Jon Bon Jovi song, and kissed her either on the forehead or the shoulder. Before he was arrested in 2009, Kenneth Moreno told his wife about the incident — but left out the part where he cuddled the victim. “I don’t remember much except for crying and being like, ‘You are stupid,’” she said. The couple was separated at the time of the incident, which apparently made her more sympathetic to him. According to the Times:

“Ms. Moreno said she was upset that her husband went that far with the woman. But she quickly got past that, she said, in part because they had been separated for several months at the time; their relationship was buckling under stress from her attending college classes, as well as conflicts that he had with his former girlfriend, with whom he had a child.”
Her forgiveness of his infidelity and the eyebrow-raising reasons for their breakup are to me, as a woman, fascinating. I have to wonder why Julia Moreno is so damn forgiving of her hubby, why he’s been acquitted by not only a jury but by his wife too. Is Julia Moreno herself a victim — a victim of the idea that a good woman stands by her man and self-sacrifices, no matter the personal cost to her?

That question could be a whole separate blog post entirely (one which I may get around to writing). But in the mean time, I’m dismayed — to put it mildly — that media outlets have not only let Julia Moreno blame and slut-shame the victim, but have furthered the “catfight” and “woman in denial” narratives that are harmful to women in general.

A civil suit is still pending against Kenneth Moreno and Franklin Mata. If these cops are eventually found guilty in a civil trial — and I pray they are — the media coverage has a higher standard to attain. Here’s hoping they do it.
