Today in Madrid, Spain, Cameron Diaz was abroad promoting the release of her new movie Bad Teacher with a photocall at the Villamagna Hotel. Playing Elizabeth, a foul-mouth junior high school teacher, Cameron arrived in a white romper and red tweed Elizabeth and James blazer. Bad Teacher grabbed our attention when we heard Cameron would be starring alongside ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake. The two, who dated for three years in 2003, even have a sex scene!

An Irving high school teacher was arrested Wednesday night, accused by police of having had sex with a male student more than 20 times during a three-month period in 2009.

April St. John Alexander, 26, of Haltom City was charged with one count of inappropriate relationship between a student and a teacher – a felony. She was released from the Irving jail this morning on $50,000 bail.

Alexander was a biology teacher at MacArthur High School in Irving in the fall of 2009 when she started a relationship with a 16-year-old student, police said.

The student, now 18, told police that he and the teacher had sex approximately 25 times – both at the school and in Alexander’s car – from October to December of that year, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
Irving police said they learned of the alleged relationship in March of this year, when they were investigating a separate but similar allegation against Alexander.

Alexander taught at MacArthur from October 2008 until her resignation in November 2010.
Irving ISD spokesman Tony Thetford said Alexander did not explain why she was resigning.

From writing erotica to doing porn, educators have come under fire for legal X-rated extracurricular activities

The revelation that Judy Buranich, the same woman teaching classics like "Catcher in the Rye" to high school students, also writes erotic novels with names like "Rednecks 'n' Romance" shocked a small group of parents in the town of Middleburg, Penn. They called up local news outlets, which were all too happy to relay the parents' tasty morsels of outrage and paranoia, like: "I don't want my son sitting in her class thinking, is she looking at him in a certain way." The next stop: The Daily Mail, naturally.

At no point was Buranich, who writes erotica as Judy Mays, in danger of losing her job; sanely, the administration didn't actually consider disciplining her over her legal side-job. But there is clearly something irresistible about teachers with decidedly adult extracurricular activities, and many have not been so lucky as Buranich. In 2009, a Florida biology teacher was fired after photos of her in a bikini were discovered online (interestingly enough, after failing to find a new teaching job, she turned to porn). Earlier this year, a teacher in San Diego contested his firing over posting an ad -- with a photo of his face and his penis -- on Craigslist's men-seeking-men section. Last month, a high school secretary in Quebec was sacked after it was discovered that she had done porn; and just the month before, a Florida high school teacher was canned when her X-rated past surfaced. Then, of course, there's Melissa Petro who recently wrote in Salon about losing her job over her public admission of a sex work past.

It kind of makes you wonder why we care so much about what teachers do in their private and -- with the exception of Petro -- entirely legal sex lives. This is part of a problem popping up in nearly every profession, not just teaching. So many of us live online -- posting photos to Flickr, checking in on Foursquare, tweeting about Happy Hour exploits and casually commenting on Facebook friends' walls. Never before has it been so difficult to keep our private selves totally private, and the potential for professional conflict is huge. The stakes are raised even higher when it comes to teachers, though. As concerned parents have pointed out, they're teaching "our kids," the young and impressionable future generation. Does being an erotica writer make one unfit for that task? What about being a fan of Craigslist's "casual encounters" or a former sex worker?

Culturally, we're already profoundly anxious about teenage sexuality. Think of all the ways we try to protect kids from sex -- from strict curfews to abstinence-only education. A year ago, I wrote about a high school teacher who, after hearing that she was getting laid off, blurted out to her class that she was becoming a stripper and selling her eggs; parents wereoutraged over the incident and the teacher was investigated by school officials (even though they were already taking away her job). It's no surprise then that some parents would be hesitant to invite someone with a publicly available sexual resume of any sort into the classroom. Of course, most adults have a sexual past of some sort -- but it's a different thing when concrete evidence of it is readily available. When you can go online and call up an excerpt from an erotic novel about interspecies alien loving written by your son's English teacher -- just, wow. Take this passage from Buranich's "Celestial Passions" series: "A shiver danced up her spine. Wow! I'd love to see him naked. Will his cock match the rest of him?" Reading that simply changes the way you and your kid view said teacher: Suddenly, you become aware of her as a woman with a, shall we say, rich sexual fantasy world.

But, is that such an awful thing? As a friend who used to teach told me: "It's pretty shitty, honestly: We have a pay scale that relies on teachers to be altruists. Now they have to be nuns, too? Bullshit!" It does seem unfair to deny people in such a strained profession (there have been a number of ugly layoffs recently, notably in New York) a personal outlet like writing erotic novels. It's also impractical: I guarantee you that scores of high school English teachers across this country are pseudonymously writing online fan fiction -- everything from Harry Potter slash to naughty renderings of Jane Austen. And fer crying out loud, after a long day trying to get teenagers excited about reading "Heart of Darkness," teachers at least deserve to let loose by writing about sexy vampires and werewolves and aliens, oh my.

There's a difference between Judy Buranich and Melissa Petro, though. That Petro's sex work past has any bearing on her abilities as a teacher is absurd, but the fact that she engaged in an illegal activity makes her case harder to defend. As for the former porn performers and casual encounters fans, their behavior may be edgy, but it's legal. If they do a satisfactory job in the classroom -- who cares? It's only a problem because we know about it, and we only know about it because of the revealing powers of the Internet -- against which few of us are fully protected. And, hey, judge not, lest ye be judged.

Beginning with the infamous Mary Kay Letourneau case in 1995, Americans have been fascinated with female teachers who cross the line and have sexual relationships with their students.

According to an AP study, between 2001 and 2005, 2,570 educators had their teaching credentials revoked, denied, surrendered or sanctioned following allegations of sexual misconduct. While only ten percent of those teachers were women, female teachers who have slept with their students receive the lion's share of media attention.

We decided to see just how much attention has been paid. Looking at search trends, news reports, and blogosphere chatter, we determined the fifty most infamous female teacher sex scandals. We've compiled the list below, hoping to shed light on a growing concern within our education system.

MANCHESTER, Tenn. -- A third-grade Coffee County elementary school teacher is fighting for her job after posing for some racy photos that were intended to stay private.

"It's something that you would see in a Playboy or Hustler magazine," said one parent.Alisha Vaughn teaches at Deerfield Elementary School."Now they're out and about in the entire county. My second-grade child came home and asked me if I had known her teacher had taken pictures with her clothes off. How do you respond to that?" said a mom who has a child at the school.That mother responded like several others. She signed a petition demanding Vaughn's termination because she said this isn't the kind of lesson she wants her children learning at school."It's not a legal issue. It's about an ethical and moral issue and an obligation to her chosen profession. It teaches our children that it's OK to take your clothes off for pictures. It's 'do as I say, not as I do' and that's not the way it should be," said the parent.

 According to Vaughn's lawyer, she was suspended without pay for several days and is now back in the classroom."There is a person in Manchester who has a private vendetta against Ms. Vaughn, and that person has somehow obtained these photographs without Ms. Vaughn's permission, and they have disseminated these photographs throughout the community in Manchester in an effort to cause as much harm and embarrassment as possible to Ms. Vaughn. This person or persons disseminated these photographs to minors and students in Manchester, and this dissemination of those photographs may well be criminal conduct on that person's part," said attorney Roger Bean.

When asked if he planned to press charges against the person who sent the pictures out, Bean said that would be up to the district attorney to decide.The superintendent of Coffee County Schools refused to comment.

A New Zealand primary school teacher who posed nude in Penthouse has been deregistered "for bringing the profession into disrepute."


Rachel Whitwell appeared in the January 2010 issue of the magazine draped over a school desk, alongside a story that quoted her saying: "I am submissive in the bedroom because during the day I have to be in control in the classroom."

The New Zealand Teachers' Council's disciplinary tribunal found the actions of the 29-year- old amounted to serious misconduct and revoked her teaching credentials.

Whitwell said she had left her job in Auckland before the photoshoot to pursue a modeling career.

She said that as she was not employed by the school at the time the photographs were taken, she should not be struck off for appearing in a magazine that was legally available throughout New Zealand.

"Even if I was teaching, I do not believe that you or the teachers' council has any right to impose Victorian moral opinions on my life outside the classroom," she told the tribunal.

In the magazin, 27-year-old Rachel Whitwell boasts about her career as a children's teacher as well as her other saucy exploits.

"I am a 26-year-old single school teacher from New Zealand that would love to get into modelling," Rachel Whitwell, using the nickname Lexy, says in an Australian adult magazine.

The Aukland teacher, Rachel Whitwell even goes on to talk about her time as a writing erotic stories. Rachel Whitwell also runs and owns her own pole dancing studio.

A spokesperson for the New Zealand Teachers council expressed concern over the photographic appearance by Rachel Whitwell in the men's publications.

Peter Lind from the NZ Teachers Council said of Rachel Whitwell: "What is private and what is public is always a grey area but when they intersect we investigate.

"When a teacher is in the public arena we must say that it does impact on their ability to do their job."

Reports said Rachel Whitwell is registered to teach until September 2011, but currently is not employed in a teaching capacity as she brings up her young daughter.

In the ours after grabbing international news headlines, Rachel Whitwell wrote a thank you not on her personal Facebook page for all the support she had been recieving: "Thank you to everyone who has sent me nice supportive messages," Rachel wrote on her Facebook update.

" I would like to reply to everyone but have had quite a few and now off too bed. Once again Thank you xx"
